Beginning his academic career at the University of Malta, Bernard Gauci received his B.A. in economics in 1970. He was then accepted by the University of New Hampshire to study for his masters and doctorate in economics. While there, Bernard Gauci also worked as a research assistant. He also served as a visiting part-time lecturer at the Thompson School of Applied Science at UNH. Gauci has also taught on a part time basis at Lynchburg College and Roanoke College.

In 1978, Bernard Gauci joined the Department of Economics at Hollins University, where he initially served as Assistant Professor until 1984, and then as Associate Professor of Business and Economics until 2005. He is now Emeritus Professor at Hollins University.

Bernard Gauci is also the author of several publications.
